More Moms Nursing Older Children

There’s a fascinating and positive article in the Boston Globe today about how more and more women–mainly highly educated women (thank you very much)–are choosing to breastfeed their toddlers, preschoolers and older children. Barbara F. Meltz wrote “Supply and demand: Evidence suggests more women are breast-feeding their children until they’re toddlers and older — and […]

Breastfeeding Protects Maternal Mental Health

Recent research shows that inflammation plays a role in the development of depression. A new journal article ties this fact in with breastfeeding’s ability to protect against depression.
[B]reastfeeding protects maternal mood by lowering stress. When stress levels are lower, the mother’s inflammatory response system will not be activated, thereby lowering her risk of depression.

Breastfeeding Quote from “The Other Boleyn Girl”

I’m reading the historical novel The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. Being set in the English royal court in the 1500s it’s not exactly breastfeeding-friendly, but this passage charmed me:
I held her in my arms constantly. There was a wet nurse to attend her, but I argued that my breasts hurt so much that […]

Fostering Independence in the Breastfed Child

Have you ever heard any of the following misguided statements?
“She needs to learn to separate from you and be independent. Just leave and I’ll get her to take a bottle.”
“You’re spoiling that child by picking her up so much!”
“He’ll never want to leave your bed!”
While my family supports my attachment parenting style, I have read and heard those statements […]

Nursing Pillows: A Poll

I enjoyed using a Boppy nursing pillow in the early days of breastfeeding (and later I used it for my baby’s tummy time or to help support her as she learned to sit). I don’t think a nursing pillow is a necessity–certainly regular pillows work also–but it is nice to have one. You can sew […]

My Breasts Don’t Feel Full — Is My Milk Supply Low?

One of the biggest worries a nursing mother may have is low milk supply. Consider the following scenarios:
Nursing is going well but suddenly the baby seems unsatisfied and wants to nurse all the time. The mother’s breasts feel less full, particularly in the evening. Is the mother’s supply low?
In the early days a nursing mother’s […]
