First let me reassure mothers that it is entirely possible and normal to breastfeed once a baby has teeth. Keep in mind that the leading health organizations recommend breastfeeding for one to two years minimum–a time span that surely involves teething. Many babies never bite (they know not to bite the breast that feeds them!) […]

When an Ohio daycare discriminated against Robin Neorr by charging more to feed her daughter breastmilk, she didn’t just get mad. She decided to work for change. She got involved in the movement of lactation activism and formed the Ohio Breastfeeding Coalition. Among other things, the group will work for legislative change, starting with revising […]

When I asked: “Who gave you the best breastfeeding advice?” two sources emerged as the clear leaders: lactation consultants and La Leche League leaders/members. Doctors fell very low on the list, which only goes to prove that it’s not easy to get good advice from medical professionals lacking breastfeeding training.

Breastfeeding helps establish good eating habits right from the start. If a mother listens to her baby and feeds on cue, the child learns to regulate his or her own eating habits (and does not overeat just to finish off the last bit of artificial milk in a baby bottle). The baby gets exposed to […]

La Leche League International offers a wide variety of podcasts on breastfeeding, parenting, and women’s health and related issues. I’m impressed by the list of medical professionals, breastfeeding experts and authors interviewed in the […]

It’s been over a week so I feel confident saying that I’ve successfully night-weaned my toddler. I know there are those of you who aren’t impressed that it took 27 months to accomplish this task, but I’m quite proud that it was accomplished gently, slowly and without tears. It ended up taking three phases.
1. Separate […]

It brought a smile to my face to read the press release put out by Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport (MSP) this week. The airport announced that it has opened a “nursing mothers room” with a rocking chair, side table, lamp, electrical outlet and emergency telephone. The room is meant to accommodate both travelers and nursing mothers […]

The hard work of lactation activists in New Mexico has paid off with the enactment of House Bill 613: Use of a Breast Pump in the Workplace (PDF). The new law states:
A. In order to foster the ability of a nursing mother who is an employee to use a breast pump in the workplace, an […]
