Breastfeeding Magazines
Remember when my sweet husband ordered me some “nursing” magazines? It occurred to me today to search for breastfeeding magazines on Amazon. After all, I love the NEW BEGINNINGS magazine that I receive bi-monthly as part of my membership to La Leche League. (Each time I think I’ll donate my latest copy to a LLL group for others to read, but my copy gets too wrinkled from my reading it cover-to-cover during my hot soak in the bathtub LOL!)
As it turns out, Amazon sells four different subscriptions to breastfeeding magazines for delivery in the U.S. Amazon doesn’t have any reviews of these magazines, so if you have any knowledge of them, please leave a comment to share your opinion. Are they worth the subscription price? What is the target audience for each magazine (breastfeeding mothers, lactation consultants)? It seems that at least two of them — Essence and the ABM newsletter — are much like NEW BEGINNINGS in that they cater to the breastfeeding mothers who are members of those associations (and thus they would appeal to all breastfeeding mothers).
First there is Breastfeeding Outlook. It appears to offer continuing education to lactation consultants. It puts out four issues per year for US $29.00. Check out this sample issue.
Next there is the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers Newsletter. The ABM is a charity in the United Kingdom. Its newsletter comes out four times per year at a price of US $22.46.
Then there is Essence: the Magazine of the Australian Breastfeeding Association. It’s a bi-monthly magazine for US $72.62 per year.
Finally there is the Breastfeeding Review. It is also put out by the Australian Breastfeeding Association, with three issues per year for US $54.22.

I’m a long-time subscriber to Essence. The subscription price quoted is, I suspect, inclusive of annual membership to the ABA.
It’s a magazine targeted to nursing mothers and offers reader stories, breastfeeding/parenting mother-to-mother tips, articles on breastfeeding, lactivism and attachment-parenting related topics. It’s a good afternoon’s read every couple of months. I usually pass my copy on to a like-minded friend after I’m done.
Cheers,
Steph.

I receive the Breastfeeding Outlook at work, I am an breastfeeding couselor at a WIC office, working on becoming a lactation consultant. The target audience is definetly geared towards those that work with and provide support to breastfeeding moms. Always a great read, lots of interesting “did you know” items. There is a section about what books are currently popular with new parents. Abstracts of studies that are out, plus keeping you up to date on advocacy and legislation related to breastfeeding. I really enjoy reading it!

is it just me or do these prices seem really high? i think i would only pay $12 for 4 issues, their prices are nearly double that. amazing that you can get literature from formula companies for free but you have to pay such high rates for breastfeeding periodicals

For at least some of them, the price includes membership to the organization that puts out the periodical, and the extra money goes to help support the nonprofit work of the group.

Actually, the annual subscription rate for Breastfeeding Outlook’s newsletter *is* about half of what’s quoted above. $29 is the two-year rate (8 issues). Please see our website (not Amazon’s) for details.
Angela, keep up the good work of this site.

Next issue is due out at the start of July and has lots on sleep and breastfeeding, a report on milk banking, motherhood second time round, tips on returning to work and continuing to breastfeed, why some mums choose to stay at home, breastfeeding news and more. Very favourable advertising rates too.
