Breastfeeding News for September 27, 2007

Sophie Currier won her appeal for extra time to pump during the medical licensing exam. Appeals Court Judge Gary Katzmann ruled:

In order to put the petitioner on equal footing as the male and non-lactating female examinees, she must be provided with sufficient time to pump breast milk and to address the same physiological and other functions to which those examinees are able to attend

A Texas mother was not allowed to breastfeed her son in the Disney Store in the Round Rock outlet mall. Watch the video coverage to see how well the mother handles the interview and how she demonstrates nursing her son! (Thanks Melissa for the tip on this one!) For more on Texas law on breastfeeding in public, see Texas Law Loophole Explained.

The Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge set for this coming Saturday is now up to 229 sites across Canada and the United States, including sites in 24 different U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

From what I understand she has allready taken this exam and she FAILED! She has been given extra time and should just take the test. Many other mothers in this world have been able to go to work, and take tests even when they are brestfeeding! I would NOT want her as my doctor. If she can’t manage her time so that she can pump, then how can anyone expect her to handle the stress that she WILL be under in the work enviorment. She is making women in general look like we are not capable of having it all. She needs to make a choice, take the exam, or wait and take the next exam in a few months. She makes me ill complaining, that it is not fare, so what excause will she come up with next? She is giving mothers a bad name. She is not the first mother that is breastfeeding to take this exam, no one else got any special treatment, so why should she?
