My second nursling is two-and-a-half now and I’m surprised to find myself with a bit of breastfeeding burnout. I happily nursed my first through this age, but I’m having a harder time this go around.
What’s the difference this time? For one, I’ve been nursing for a lot longer than just the two and a […]

It’s been over a week so I feel confident saying that I’ve successfully night-weaned my toddler. I know there are those of you who aren’t impressed that it took 27 months to accomplish this task, but I’m quite proud that it was accomplished gently, slowly and without tears. It ended up taking three phases.
1. Separate […]

The poll results get more and more interesting as the number of responses grows. For the last poll I asked: “Tell us how long you plan to nurse or simply your opinion on weaning by answering: When should a nursling wean?”

I’ve talked about weaning techniques and you know my opinion on extended breastfeeding and child-led weaning. Now I want to know your opinion.
Tell us how long you plan to nurse or simply your opinion on weaning by answering: When should a nursling wean?
After six months
After the baby has teeth

After the baby can talk
After […]

A reader writes:
Q: I could use some weaning advice for mothers who have been feeding on demand. I just cannot work all day and nurse all night. I am truly at the end of my tether.
A: Good for you for breastfeeding your baby on demand for a full year! When you start to resent nursing, […]

I had trouble figuring out what I wanted to “be” when I grew up. It was easier to know what I didn’t want to be. I didn’t want to be a doctor because I knew I couldn’t handle the job emotionally. A sensitive girl whose eyes well up at the mere sound of an ambulance […]

Before I became pregnant, I was surprised to hear that some mothers breastfed their children beyond the first year. Then my daughter was born and we embarked on our nursing relationship. Almost immediately it became clear that breastfeeding was much more than infant nutrition that could be replaced with cow’s milk at a year of […]
