Design and Instructions for Nursing Necklace

by Angela White, J.D., breastfeeding counselor on December 2nd, 2006

tammysnursingnecklace.jpgThis gorgeous nursing necklace was designed by b5media’s Tammy Powley, author of Jewelry and Beading. I had written about how to make your own nursing necklace, and offered some safety guidelines, but I didn’t have a specific design to share. Tammy was kind enough to provide this lovely design and instructions for beginning beaders. The best part? She estimates the whole do-it-yourself project costs U.S. $20!

Keep in mind that this design is copyrighted, which means it may not be reproduced for sale. If you’d like to make one of your own for personal use or as a gift for a nursing mother, then check out Tammy’s post for a supply list and step-by-step instructions including photo illustrations. Thanks so much Tammy!

[…] Nursing necklaces retail on the web anywhere from $13.50 to $125 plus shipping, but it would be a fun project for a mother or even a mother and her older children to make bead necklaces at home. There are several bead stores on-line. Your local bead store will carry beads for every budget including high-end beads, while craft stores such as Jo-Ann Fabrics and Michaels will offer less expensive choices. For beading techniques, design ideas and projects, visit one of the many jewelry craft sites available. I’ve added some safety tips for nursing necklaces as well and a free necklace design and step-by-step instructions. […]

excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of a breastfeeding necklace? is it to distract the baby or give her somethign to do with her hands? i wear glasses and am full of trepidation about getting them broken in the process of breastfeeding, as i’m just about blind without them and my prescription is expensive … would this help?

A breastfeeding necklace serves multiple purposes. It can help a distractible baby focus and keep nursing rather than popping off and looking around the room. Mainly though it keeps the baby from playing with something else — like your glasses, your other breast, your mouth :) I think it would be a great thing to try if you’re worried about your glasses getting broken. Good luck!
