Breastfeeding 1-2-3

Join the Breastfeeding Challenge 2008

by Angela White, J.D., breastfeeding counselor on May 13th, 2008

The Quintessence Foundation plans the 8th annual Breastfeeding Challenge, scheduled this year for October 11, 2008. Basically it’s a friendly competition to promote breastfeeding:

This fun event is a challenge for which geographic area (province, state or territory) has the most breastfeeding babies, as a percentage of the birthrate, “latched on” at 11am local time.

Last year’s event involved 5,383 babies at 230 sites across Canada and the United States! Registration is open now for this year’s event. Visit the Breastfeeding Challenge 2008 invitation for more information.

I will be happy to report that I will not be participating. Both my kids are weaned. After 4 1/2 years combine breastfeeding.

Emily, that’s wonderful that you’ve had a happy ending to several successful years of breastfeeding! Congrats!

Thanks! That was 2 kids too. Even though I am no longer nursing, I do enjoy your blog.

I doubt that I’ll be participating this year, either. Reid tells me more and more often that she doesn’t want milkies. At nearly 4, I think that she means it.

October 11th is an unfortunate day to choose, I think, since it is the Saturday of the Thanksgiving Weekend in Canada. I would imagine many people will be travelling that weekend. I’ll post a reminder on my blog closer to the date. The challenge offered good opportunity for raising the public profile of breastfeeding.

MomOnTheGo, I didn’t realize that’s Thanksgiving weekend, but you would think the organizers would know since the Quintessence Foundation is based in British Columbia. I agree that could certainly affect participation this year. Hopefully though the event will continue to grow, and I am glad you’ll be putting up a reminder!

Do you think that Australia could be registered as a participating country? I’m really keen to participate, as would many local mums??!!

Hi Katie G! I couldn’t tell from the website whether or not other countries (and their individual states and territories) would be welcome to participate. Here’s the email address if you want to write to ask the Quintessence Foundation:

Come back and let us know what you find out!
