When I was trying to conceive, suddenly it seemed as if pregnant women were everywhere — on the subway, at the grocery store, on the television. Not just the number you’d expect to see, but an unusual explosion in fertility all around me. Now that I write about breastfeeding, I see breastfeeding everywhere too. Last night as I soaked in a hot bath and read a book for my next book club meeting, I came across a reference to mother’s milk. In Eating Heaven by Jennie Shortridge, the main character is a magazine writer and she’s been asked to write a story about comfort food.

What do the words “meat loaf and mashed potatoes” or “chicken soup” have to do with love? Everything, according to psychologist and family therapist Nancy P. Levy. “Our earliest experiences of love include food, starting with mother’s milk,” she says….

p. 78. Interesting! What a pleasant surprise to see such a statement in mainstream fiction.
