The Things Kids Say: Update on Babysitters

by Angela White, J.D., breastfeeding counselor on September 20th, 2007

Not too long ago I confessed that I had never paid a babysitter to watch my children in my home, and I offered several cost-saving and sanity-saving alternatives to hiring babysitters. Shortly after I wrote that article, I needed to arrange for someone to watch my toddler while I accompanied my other daughter to her first day of kindergarten. I found a friend interested in a babysitting exchange (she watches my toddler one morning a week for two-and-a-half hours, then I’ll watch her toddler another morning for two-and-a-half hours). It’s a great arrangement because our children will have regular playdates (and I know my daughter will be lonely when her big sister is in school) and one morning a week I will have a little time to myself. Unfortunately for me and for my friend, she developed appendicitis and was still healing from emergency surgery on my daughter’s first day of kindergarten. She was kind enough to refer me to her regular babysitter.

I did NOT want to call someone I didn’t know, arrange to interview her and have her meet the children, and leave my child with her for three hours. I am not an outgoing person (why do you think I spend so much time on the computer?) and it took a lot of energy for me to arrange a meeting. When she first came over to meet my toddler, they hit it off right away. My older daughter liked her too, but later on when we talked to my daughter about her daddy and me taking her to school the first day, she said something that just shows how little my children have been in other people’s care:

But if Daddy comes with us to school, who will stay home with the babysitter and A.?

:) Everyone did fine! My daughter liked school, my toddler liked the babysitter, and I managed to hold back the tears of pride I had for both girls!
