Vaccinations and the Breastfeeding Family: A Poll

by Angela White, J.D., breastfeeding counselor on August 20th, 2007

vaccine-book.jpgI was really happy to hear that there’s a new book coming out this fall on the question of whether or not to have your child vaccinated. Vaccination is a hot topic among my breastfeeding friends, with some women opting to have their children fully vaccinated and some women opting to decline vaccinations altogether. Robert W. Sears, MD, FAAP wrote The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child to inform parents about the pros and cons of different vaccines. The publisher describes the book as follows:

Each chapter will be devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive discussion of what the disease is, how common or rare it is, how serious or harmless it is, the ingredients of the vaccine, and any possible side effects from the vaccine. Ultimately, parents will have to make their own informed decisions as Dr. Bob Sears is neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine. But THE VACCINE BOOK will provide exactly the information parents want and need as they make their way through the vaccination maze.

The book comes out October 22, 2007, but you can pre-order your copy now.

I’m curious to hear what your current opinion is. Please participate in the poll and leave a comment explaining your answer if you wish!

I look forward to reading this book. I vaccinated my son for everything except chicken pox. I think its crazy to vaccinate for something that is so dangerous to get as an adult. Many vaccines don’t last. Kids get chickenpox, its doesn’t kill them. In fact, Ive considered intentionally infecting my son via a pox party or something like that.

As for the other vaccines, there are so many strong opinions on either side. Its such a polarized topic and it seems like either side comes at it from an extreme perspective. With other parenting issues (breastfeeding, diapering, etc.) I found it easy to do the research and make an informed decision (breastfeeding - yes, disposable diapers, but early potty training). Not with vaccines. I will read this book with great interest.

For a preview of what the Sears family of pediatricians thinks about the chickenpox vaccine, read this article:

I am currently struggling over the issue of vaccines. At my daughter’s 6 mo. check up, I refused all vaccines. My pedi of course wasn’t too pleased! I chose some vaccines, as I know she won’t get the chicken pox one and not the MMR one yet (my son is allergic to eggs so I don’t want to risk her getting that vaccine.) I also can’t wait for the Sears book!

I read a book called “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children’s Vaccinations”, by Stephanie Cave, that I highly recommend if you need to make some decisions sooner than the Sears book comes out. The author is a doctor and she very fairly presents all of the theories out there about vaccines and their potential complications, how much research backs up those theories, etc. She has very specific recommendations for what conditions she thinks should make you choose to forego each particular vaccine, and her own alternative timetable. I don’t know whether to describe the book as “pro” or “anti” vaccine; she takes the risks quite seriously, but basically says, “If you do decide to vaccinate, consider doing it this way.”

I found Neustadtler’s The Vaccine Guide to be a great reference. It is a very balanced examination of pros and cons on each vaccine. It also gave me ammo for those tense discussions with the ped. But I see the latest edition is probably not new enough. Perhaps Sears has new data to add.

I didn’t know about the upcoming book until your post, and I am thrilled to hear of it!
We have 2 sons, the oldest is 3 and our baby is going on 5 months. Neither boy has recevied any vaccines. We have done much research, prayer, and thinking on this matter, and for now we are happy w/ our decision to decline vaccinating. For reasons of their health at best, I try to stop on top of the latest info and research on the issue. I know no dr would refuse an apt TO vaccinate!

We mostly decliend due to ingredient issues and all vaxing can be linked to, from learning disabilities to other autoimmune disorders. Scary stuff.

    Great post. Thank you!
