Weaning from a Supplemental Nursing System (Mom-to-Mom #11)

by Angela White, J.D., breastfeeding counselor on March 16th, 2008

Jeannee recently left a comment seeking information on weaning from a supplemental nursing system:

I am an IBCLC and currently searching for information or testimonials on weaning from the supplementary nursing system. Once the line is introduced mothers and babies do seem to become dependent on it and knowing the best way to remove it from the breastfeeding situation seems to be as elusive as the scarlet pimpernel. Could someone assist me please to help these mothers? Thank you.

If you used a supplemental nursing system or you are a lactation professional who has helped mothers with an SNS, please share your experience by leaving a comment! Feel free to leave links to other valuable resources as well.

I am using a SNS for my two month old, and used one with my daughter when she was an infant as well. It’s my goal also to use it less and less and increase my milk supply more and more. Much credit to those of you going through the process and all that comes along with it. Your babies are benefitting and in turn so are you.

I have been increasing my milk through taking herbal supplements. The best site I know of and I’m so greatful for is Motherlove. I have been taking Goat’s Rue to because it is a strong galactagogue and also because it can increase mamary tissue. One of my breasts is about two cup sizes bigger than the other, with the larger one producing an extraordinary amount more milk than the other. It was my hope that more milk would return to the smaller breast, and it has. I recently order their More Milk Special Blend which is full of other powerful galactagogues like blessed thistle and fenugreek and nettles.

I have noticed my son is satisfied after feeding from me and I have been able to slowly use the SNS feeder less and less. I don’t use it at all during the night, never have, and usually give him some once we’re up in the morning. I’ve notice after taking the goat’s rue for over a month he’s sleeping in longer, and not “asking” for the supplement right away when we wake up in the am. And for the past week or so not needing it until the afternoon.

I would say the best way to wean would just be to introduce it less, knowing your milk is increasing, weather through pumping, or taking lactation herbs. Take those moments when you know they might be frustrated and crying b/c they are used to having it and bring them outside for some fresh air, or start the vaccum cleaner, or any other distraction trick you know, and trust in your heart that you are not depriving your child, but that you are encouraging them to change. Which is hard for all of us!

I also have noticed there is a higher demand for the SNS in the evening, around 4pm until we go to sleep for the night around 8 or 9pm. This is also the time when your milk supply is the least during the day. Which makes sense. Also when the dynamic of the house is changing, and he may be looking for that added comfort and consistency. I still give him about an once and a half in the SNS at least once maybe twice during that time frame.

I will be doing weight checks to see that he is gaining weight appropriately as I start diminishing the amount I do the SNS. I know that the herbal supplements have been a great help and listening to my body’s thirst, and drinking plenty of fluids.

I support all women who use the SNS, much credit and appreciation to us all!! May the milk flow and our supply grow.

    best,
    angie
