Where Mothers Are Giving Birth: Poll Results

Hard to believe I reach 30 weeks of pregnancy tomorrow! As part of planning for the birth, I have been reading Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth (my one-sentence rave review: this is the one birth book I wish I could press into the hands of every pregnant woman I encounter). It’s got me thinking a lot about the type of birth I hope to have (at home, with as few interventions as possible), and it makes the most recent poll results all that much more interesting. Of the 150 voters, 73% said they last gave birth in a hospital setting. That left 22% who gave birth in other locations (and 5% who are currently pregnant with their first). Here is the complete breakdown:

    I love Ina May’s book too, it is my intention to give a copy to all my friends who get pregnant! I’m one of the first in our group, so there will be more soon! If it helps them have a positive feeling towards their birth then it’s money well spent, the first girl I gave it too thought it looked a bit nuts but promised to read it :)

    Thanks for the review, Half Pint Pixie! I can see people having that first reaction to the book, and I just want to impress upon them how “bad” my first two births were. The babies and I ended up being fine, but they were not the empowering, positive experiences I had hoped for - the type of experiences described in the book.

    Now that I am planning a home birth, I get a lot of interesting reactions — a lot of stories of “thank goodness I was in a hospital because X, Y, Z happened” and I just wonder to myself, well, maybe X, Y, and Z wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t at a hospital that gave you A, B, C interventions.
